Alert protection keeps a looping or misconfigured system from flooding your phones or your bill. You choose an alert limit and, optionally, a duplicate filter. Alerts over a limit are held back instead of texted.
Open Billing & Usage from your dashboard. The Alert Protection card is near the top.
Choose one limit: alerts per hour (1-500) or per day (1-10,000). The default is 250 alerts per hour. Each alert email counts as one alert, however many phones it texts, and the limit covers your whole account - every SigSpan address and group.
Under your limit, the card shows the most an hour (or a day) could cost if every alert reached every phone at $0.10 per text. Most alerts cost far less.
Turn this on if a system sometimes repeats the same alert over and over. Choose how many identical alerts to text (1-500; 10 is a good start) per 10 minutes, 1 hour or 24 hours. If a system sends a few identical alerts on purpose - say 3 in a row - set the number at or above that. By default an alert only counts as a repeat when the subject and message both match. Different alerts always text normally.
When a limit is reached, further alerts are not texted and not billed. They are not queued or sent later. They appear in your Alert history with a Held back badge, and we email your account’s users once - not once per alert - with the time texting resumes.
Automatically. A per-hour limit resets at the top of the hour, and a per-day limit at midnight in your account’s time zone. Repeated alerts text again once the duplicate window ends. While your alert limit is holding alerts, a banner on your dashboard shows when texting resumes.
Set the limit comfortably above your busiest real day, so a genuine incident always gets through, and low enough that a loop can’t surprise you. If you’re unsure, keep the default and check Alert history after your first busy week.
